School mornings can go from calm to chaos in about four minutes. Shoes go missing, breakfast gets cold and everyone’s running late. A simple routine won’t make every morning perfect, but it takes a lot of the stress out.
Start the night before
Most good mornings actually start the night before.
- Pick out clothes. All the way down to socks.
- Pack the backpack. Homework, folders and anything that needs to be signed.
- Lunch ready to go. Pack it, or at least plan it.
- Shoes by the door. Same spot every night.
Keep the morning steps the same
Kids do better when they know what’s next. Pick an order and stick to it. For example:
- Wake up and use the bathroom
- Get dressed
- Eat breakfast
- Brush teeth
- Brush hair
- Shoes and jacket on
- Backpack on, out the door
Use pictures, not reminders
A picture chart lets kids check what’s next on their own, so you’re not the one saying “Did you brush your teeth?” five times. Little kids who can’t read yet can follow pictures. Bigger kids like checking things off.
Little things that help
- Wake up a little earlier than you think you need to. Ten extra minutes changes everything.
- Use a clock or a timer. Some families use a visual timer so kids can see time passing.
- Keep breakfast simple. Have two or three easy options on repeat.
- Save screens for after. If the TV goes on, everything slows down.
- Make a launch pad. One spot by the door for backpacks, shoes and anything that has to go to school.
When it still falls apart
Some mornings will be messy no matter what. Try to end the morning on a kind note anyway. A hug and “I love you, have a great day” at the door matters more than whether the hair got brushed.
